From the terrace overlooking the deep blue seas, past the two large swimming pools and the children’s swimming pool, the gardens sweep down to the water’s edge. Bright blue and white sun umbrellas and comfortable loungers, well spaced for comfort and privacy, dot the green lawns that stretch the considerable length of the hotel frontage. The Amathus Beach Hotel lies just 12 km east of the town of Limassol in a quiet location but with some restaurants, bars and a supermarket and beach shop within walking distance. It is ideally situated for exploring the area, and is right in the heart of the old kingdom of Amathus, an ancient trading centre and the island’s first city-state built between the 10th and 8th centuries BC. Remains of an aqueduct and traces of the agora (the marketplace) can still be seen here and in the town of Limassol is the medieval castle where Richard the Lionheart was married in 1191.
One of the delights of the hotel is the walk along the beach, part board walk, very popular with joggers, serious walkers and strollers. Seating along the walk affords the opportunity to sit and view the convoy of ships on the far horizon queueing up to enter the largest harbour in Cyprus down the coast at the Old Port.
